UP5 chair by B&B Italia was designed by Gaetano Pesce in 1969 and it is an the icon of contemporary design. Since then, the creation by the “anti-designer” Pesce has been recognized as an expression of the radical design of the seventies and acquired by the permanent collections of many museums, including MoMA in New York.
UP5 had anatomical features and anthropomorphic references; it was in fact a large womb and resembled the votive statues of prehistoric fertility goddesses. With one more element: a sphere that served as ottomans linked to the body of the chair. Therefore the image of the convenience and comfort was overlapped to the more figurative image of a woman with ball and chain. (Source: B&B Italia)
Today, the series UP is enriched with a Junior version. UPJ perfectly recreates the concept and forms of UP5_6, it is fun and playful.
